MHS December 2025 Athlete of the Month

A composite graphic celebrating all Winter Sport Athletes of the Month for December 2025. Features individual portraits and names of student-athletes from basketball, wrestling, swimming, and cheerleading.

We’re excited to announce the first wave of student-athletes who have been named our December Athletes of the Month! 📣

These exceptional athletes from boys & girls basketball, boys & girls wrestling, swimming and cheerleading have shown outstanding dedication and sportsmanship on and off the court and mat or in and out of the pool!

Each coach took the time to write down summaries on why these individuals truly stand out. Let’s give a roaring cheer for these December stars! ⭐

The image shows a young male athlete in a blue wrestling uniform standing on a wrestling mat, with a "December Athlete of the Month" banner displayed above him.

Boys Wrestling: Daniel Jackson is consistently working hard and is a great leader of the team. He leads by example, pushing himself and his teammates to improve every day. Daniel has placed in every tournament he has competed in and currently has a record of 12-3. Beyond athletics, Daniel serves as the vice president of the Youth Tribal Council, where he demonstrates commitment to his community. Daniel is having a great senior season, and we are thankful to have him! Keep up the great work!

The image shows a female wrestler in action, wearing a red and white uniform and headgear, competing on a wrestling mat with the school's logo visible in the background.

Girls Wrestling: Sammy "Tuff Stuff" Romero is a one of a kind student athlete. She is hands down one of the most coachable student athletes I have ever had the privilege of coaching.

This is her first year wrestling and she has developed into an exceptional competitor on the mat. Every week she finds a way to win and hand out losses to her opponents. It has been amazing to watch this development play out this season. Every day she is full of questions on how to improve and then puts the learning into practice. She is what all coaches need in a program. Not just from the coachability stand point, but her work ethic, the importance she places on her academics, entirely committed, zero quit attitude, reliable, responsible, and displays exemplary character on and off the mat. These have a great affect in a program. She is a fighter and one who overcomes adversity!

She is a great example to follow and knows what it means to earn her success. I am proud to say I am her coach and I can not wait to see what she makes of her future.

– Head Coach Bradley Padgett

The image shows a basketball player in action, with other players and spectators visible in the background on a basketball court.

Boys Basketball: Kiellan averaged six points, five rebounds, and two assists per game during the month of December, but his impact went far beyond the stat sheet. He was one of our most consistent and reliable defenders, routinely taking on the challenge of guarding the opposing team's best player. Kiellan embraced that challenge each game and set the tone with his effort and toughness. He was a key contributor to our success throughout the month on both ends of the game.

– Head Coach Nick Brown

The image shows a female basketball player in mid-jump, with her arms raised, against a backdrop of a basketball court and spectators in the stands.

Girls Basketball: Marlee Simmelink is our Athlete of the Month. She was the team’s leading scorer for the month of December and has been the heart of our defense, consistently setting the tone with her effort and intensity. Marlee does an amazing job both on and off the floor, showing dedication, leadership, and a strong work ethic in everything she does. She is a great representative of what it means to be a student-athlete and is truly deserving of this recognition.

– Head Coach Heath Alexander

The image shows a swimmer in a swimming pool, with the text "DECEMBER ATHLETE OF THE MONTH" and "NEILSON CURRIER" displayed prominently.

Swimming: Neilson came into this season with his hair on fire, so hot the pool water can't put it out. The work he put in over the summer was incredible and the results are showing. Neilson recently took first place in the 100 Meter Breaststroke at the Raven's Classic against all of the Bend and Redmond schools. Neilson never misses a practice and comes in every day ready to work and improve. We are very excited to see how the rest of the season goes!

– Coach Joannah Pendell and Coach Justin Bendele

The image features a cheerleader in a red uniform with the word "MADRID" on it, posing on a blue background with a logo and the text "DECEMBER ATHLETE OF THE MONTH" and the name "JAZMIN CABRERA".

Cheerleading: This girl has surprised us from day one. Jazmin is always the first to want to try something new and is very coachable. She has stepped into a flyer position and is really finding her passion. Jazmin has the best can do attitude and is always making everyone laugh. We can't wait to see what all she accomplishes this season. We are so happy to have her this year.
